Work continues on historic post office in Melfort

Feb 19, 2019 | 2:24 PM

A major project at the historic post office in Melfort is well underway.

The contractor is on-site replacing the 100-year-old windows with historically accurate replicas.

Director of Development Planning and Community Relations Brent Lutz told northeastNOW the window replacement is progressing nicely.

“Many of the new windows have been installed on the first floor and on the second floor,” Lutz said. “The contractor is working their way through the building. We anticipate that most of the first floor will be complete by the middle of March, and hopefully [by] the end of March the whole project will be completed.”

Lutz said the new, energy efficient windows look good, and they have already seen a reduction in drafts, making the building more comfortable.

He said people can still purchase a postal box at the historic post office.

For a donation of $100, you can have your name put on a postal box in the building. The money goes toward the window replacement project.

Lutz said there is roughly $43,000 owing.

One of the components of the window replacement project is setting up a permanent art installation and donor recognition wall, both of which will be completed once windows are installed.

The facility is currently available for rent for private wedding ceremonies and photo shoots, and city-sponsored events.
