Wolf sighting spooks northern community

Nov 1, 2017 | 2:00 PM

The small community of Timber Bay is on high alert after a wolf sighting this week.

Fresh timberwolf tracks were spotted Tuesday afternoon in Timber Bay near the hamlet office.

The timing of the sighting was especially alarming with children going out trick or treating.

According to Timber Bay School Principal Samara Bird, timberwolf sightings are rare but have occurred in the area.

“This one is too close to the community…where someone actually physically saw the wolf that made the tracks,” she said.

The school took immediate precautions and all children in the community were told not to walk anywhere alone.

“I have kids myself so they were not allowed to be outside alone until we know there is nothing out there,” Bird said.

Community leaders are meeting with members from the local RCMP detachment Wednesday afternoon to discuss a possible action plan.

paNOW has contacted the Ministry of Environment for comment.

A ministry spokesperson said as of yet, they had not received any reports or complaints of wolves in the Timber Bay area.
