Respect your Elder, traded to his childhood Mustangs

Nov 1, 2017 | 5:55 PM

Tristen Elder grew up in Kinistino, about a 15-minute drive to watch his Melfort Mustangs play. Now, he’ll make that same drive to the rink every day to actually play for that team.

Elder was traded to his childhood favourite team on Wednesday morning, coming from the Humboldt Broncos. The Mustangs gave up 20-year-old forward Jaxon Joseph and the rights to 16-year-old defenceman Kade Olsen, who’s currently with the Beardy’s Blackhawks Midget AAA team in exchange for forward Elder, who turns 20 on Dec. 11.

“I’m definitely really excited,” Elder said. “It’s 10-15 minutes from home, I’ve always wanted to play here. It’s really exciting that it’s getting to happen now.

“When I was a little kid, I’d always come to Mustang games,” Elder added. “I’d probably come to as many as I could get my parents to drive to.”

Not only is the Northern Lights Palace a familiar place for Elder, and the jerseys and the team, but the coach is as well. Mustangs’ general manager and head coach Trevor Blevins coached Elder while the two were with the Tisdale Trojans Midget AAA club.

“Blevins coached me in my first year of midget. It was awesome,” Elder said. “I loved him as a coach so I’m very happy to be back with him and the team.”

Elder has 116 SJHL under his belt with 19 goals and 37 assists for 56 points for the Humboldt Broncos and the La Ronge Ice Wolves. He also played 38 games in the Western Hockey League with the Swift Current Broncos in the 2015-16 season, registering two assists. He has seven assists in nine contests so far this year.

“I’m a big player, I like to move my feet and get in the dirty areas,” the 6-foot-2, 185-pound Elder said. “I think I can chip in big offensively too for the team.”

The Mustangs are in Flin Flon Wednesday to take on the Bombers. Both teams will meet for a rematch at the Northern Lights Palace on Thursday.
