Nipawin named a ‘charming’ town

Nov 2, 2017 | 5:00 PM

The Town of Nipawin has been named one of western Canada’s most charming towns.

The article published on the online site Top Value Reviews based its findings on characteristics such as tourist attractions, historic sites, heritage events, architecture and scenery.

Nipawin, long known for its fishing and hunting opportunities, already has many titles including “Saskatchewan’s Playground,” “God’s country,” and “the end of the rainbow.”

Nipawin Mayor, Rennie Harper, said she was not surprised by the article’s findings.

“When people from other destinations come to Nipawin and meet the people and see how welcoming they are, I think there’s no doubt,” she said.

According to the article, the town has many attractive features. A highlight is its proximity to Codette and Tobin lakes. The town’s historic bridge, dating back to 1928, is also cited as a popular draw for tourists.

Other characteristics which help the town stand out are its museums, restaurants and downtown shopping opportunties, according to the article.

Harper said it’s tough to name just one reason why Nipawin is charming. She attributes the town’s popularity to the people who live and work there.

“The people have worked very hard for that recognition and I think organizations have worked very hard for that position. I think the people themselves are very welcoming,” she said.

Harper has lived in the town since 1963.

She said in that time, she saw the town grow and change adding it’s always had the “charming” feel.

Two other Saskatchewan towns are named in the article: Canora and Forget.
