Rain prevents farmers from finishing seeding

Jun 13, 2013 | 1:47 PM

Saskatchewan producers have pretty well completed spring seeding after the first week of June– and ahead of schedule.

The Ministry of Agriculture reported today 96 per cent of the provincial crop has been seeded. That’s above the five-year average of 89 per cent for this time of year.

Every crop region including the northeast has 97 per cent seeded with the exception being the southeast which has 93 per cent in the ground.

According to the province, some regions were prevented from finishing seeding last week due to rain.

“Much of the province received significant rainfall which has slowed down field operations,” said a government release. “The Kinistino area reported the greatest amount of rainfall at 9.3 centimetres.”

Farmers were also set back by localized flooding, frost, disease and insects, the province said.

Most producers have enough moisture. Ten per cent have too much and six per cent have a shortage.

The province said crops are at different stages of development. Fall and spring cereals are at the sampling stage, pulses have reached the vegetative stage, while canola and mustard crops are at the seedling stage.
