4-H members show off their beef

Jun 11, 2013 | 2:28 PM

4-H members were able to see the fruits of their labour Monday as the 83rd annual 4-H Finished Beef Show and Sale concluded on the Prince Albert Exhibition grounds with the sale of 83 steers.

“We had an excellent show. Everything went off without a hitch,” said Patty Soluducha, assistant manager of the Prince Albert Exhibition.

Approximately 125 4-H members from seven regional clubs brought their best animals to be displayed in front of a panel of judges who rate them in different categories.

The judge’s seemed to like what Garret Fiege of the Wild Rose 4-H Club brought to the ring. His angus yearling heifer was crowned female grand champion on Sunday and then Monday his angus cross was awarded grand champion steer.

The reserve champion female was owned by Litney Curran of the RRRR club and Madelyn Taylor of Weldon had the reserve champion steer.

“I think this one of the first years ever that we’ve had the grand champion female and grand champion steer owned by the same member.” “Kudos to that family, they’ve (brought) out some great cattle.” said Soluducha.

Fiege’s grand champion steer was sold to Davider’s Clothing and Western Wear and the Prince Albert Co-Op who then put the steer back up for auction as a way to pay tribute to the late Herschel Davider, a longtime supporter of 4-H and the beef show and sale.

“They wanted to do something to honor Herschel for his many years of service and helping out this show and sale,” Soluducha said.

Soluducha said their tribute was to resell that grand champion steer and put the money toward one of Herschel’s favorite charities the Prince Albert Children’s Haven. It sold to E&B Lumber for $4250.

The Mont St Joseph Home also benefited from the show and sale. The home was this year’s recipient of the 1470 pound charity steer, bought and raised by 4-H members.

4-H members each donate $15 to purchase the steer in the fall and raise it themselves with the help of feed donated from Co-Op Feeds and insurance coverage from Tait Insurance, Soluducha explained.

“For our regional show we started that back in 2001 and up until this year we have raised about $75,000. We were hoping to keep up that trend for raising money for local charities. And we did it again last night. We raised almost $20,000,” she said.
