Mustangs edge Hawks at the Palace

Nov 11, 2017 | 8:10 AM

The Melfort Mustangs are having plenty of success at the hands of their archrival the Nipawin Hawks.

Friday night, Melfort downed the Hawks 2-1 for their fourth win of the year against Nipawin.

Kinistino product Tristen Elder scored in his Mustang debut, giving Melfort a 1-0 lead in the second. Captain Andrew Thompson scored his sixth of the season, also in the middle period, and this would turn out to be the game-winning goal.

“[Boedy Donald] made a really good pinch and it popped right into the slot,” Thompson said. “I saw my opportunity and I just put it in the net.”

He added how goaltender Evan Plotnik played a significant role in the win too.

“He was huge back there, he made some big saves, played well. He was phenomenal to keep us in it when we were getting outshot,” Thompson said.

Plotnik turned aside 22 of 23 shots, though Declan Hobbs was solid for Nipawin as well, stopping 22 of 24. Jake Anthony came on the ice for just over three minutes due to a pad issue for Hobbs, where he made a pair of saves.

Thompson said they’ve managed to play four really good games against the Hawks, admitting they are a “hard-working team.”

“We have to bring it every shift and win every battle. We brought it every shift and that is why we won the game,” he added.

The first place Mustangs will visit Melville Saturday and Nipawin will host Estevan Sunday.
