Province encouraging students to stand up against bullying

Nov 15, 2017 | 3:52 PM

Students and staff in all schools across Saskatchewan are taking the week to learn more about bullying issues and prevention.

The topic is a constant concern for the Northeast School Division. Director of Education Don Rempel said teaching “positive behaviors” is a model they use in the classroom.

“There’s direct teaching and whole class instruction around positive behavior and what that looks and sounds like,” he told northeastNOW.

While the evolving technology and social media can cause issues, children are adapting, Rempel said.

“We do a lot of training around digital citizenship and we also train students and pride our education around appropriate interactions on social media,” Rempel said adding the training starts in Grade 6.

“I think our kids are much more private and use more discretion around what they want for an online presence. They are actually a lot more sophisticated than their parents are,” Rempel said.

A website was developed in 2014 where kids can anonymously report bullying from any device plus access other resources.

Rempel said there has been no serious reports from the division this year.
