Plans progressing on massive agri-facility in Nipawin

According to the executive vice-president of the Hanfood Group, plans remain on schedule for the opening of a new agriculture-food park facility in Nipawin in the fall of 2019.

Jack Upshall confirmed for northeastNOW pre-construction work will begin early in 2018.

“Pre-construction involves preparing the land for construction, determining the nature and extent of the sub soil and drainage and land usage,” he said.

The Nipawin project, announced in 2015, will consist of a 46,000 tonne grain and oilseed terminal, located on the old wooden elevator site in the town. The facility will be capable of filling 134 rail cars in 12 hours or less.

Neighbouring communities will also reap the benefits. CP Rail was asked to upgrade the rail line from Nipawin to past Tisdale.

“In addition to the terminal we intend on constructing a honey processing plant as well as Saskatoon berry and wild rice processing,” Upshall said.

Hanfood has been shipping one of Nipawin’s biggest exports, ice honey, across the globe to China.

Upshall said the pollution and food standards in China cause huge health problems, which is why the country is looking to buy their food elsewhere.

“The Nipawin area in particular, there’s no industry there and so anything that’s grown or developed there is considered pollution free and it’s Canadian, so we have very high standards here,” he said.

Hanfood does have plans as well to open a physical office in Nipawin.

Upshall said he would have a better idea of an opening date once an engineering firm is in place. He hopes to have the office open before the spring of 2018.
