Mustangs back in win column; Hawks earn point in first loss in seven

Dec 3, 2017 | 9:23 AM

The Melfort Mustangs shook off Friday’s heartbreaker versus Nipawin and clipped the Weyburn Red Wings 4-3 Saturday night.

The win secured the team three of four points during back-to-back home games at the Northern Lights Palace in front of the player’s parents, as every season the team schedules a weekend inviting parents to the games and other events.

Melfort took a 1-0 lead on Loch Morrison’s 12th of the year midway through the first period. The Wings drew even just three minutes later thanks to Sean Olson.

Weyburn took the lead in the second period before Justin Ball and Carson Albrecht scored for the Mustangs making it 3-2. The Wings’ Dexter Robinson scored late in the second and tied the score again heading into the final frame.

Ball notched his second of the night with just 1:46 to play, all but securing the win.

After the game, Ball said the team responded well after Friday’s third period let down.

“It was a good team win, everyone came together,” he said.

Ball added an assist while Kayle Tosh pitched in with two assists for Melfort. Arps only faced 21 Weyburn shots but Arik Weersink faced 35 shots in the Wings’ net.

The Mustangs now have points in four straight games, and Ball said they will use this success heading into Wednesday’s tilt in La Ronge.

“It’s huge having this momentum going into our next game, it really helps us,” Ball said.

In Flin Flon, the Nipawin Hawks had their seven-game winning streak snapped by the Bombers.

Kenzie Arnold, Brandan Arnold and Chad McCartney all scored but they still fell 4-3 in overtime. Thomas Lenchyshyn assisted every goal. Jake Anthony stopped 38 of 42 shots for Nipawin.

The Hawks host the Bombers on Tuesday.
