Melfort mayor all in on Uber

Dec 5, 2017 | 1:00 PM

The provincial government recently announced legislation to allow ride-sharing companies to operate in Saskatchewan, news that was warmly welcomed by Melfort’s mayor.

Melfort currently has two taxi companies, but one only runs until 7 p.m., while the other shuts down their service at 10 p.m. Mayor Rick Lang said the city would benefit from more options.

“The taxi service we’ve experienced in the past isn’t always adequate in our mind, but the service providers decide how much service they want to provide,” Lang said.

The city introduced a taxicab bylaw in June, but the bylaw focuses on fees and safety issues, and doesn’t mandate the hours of operation for cab compaines. Lang said council is open to options if anyone will come forward from Uber or other ride-sharing services.
