Melfort Fire Department prepares for 67th annual fundraiser

Dec 7, 2017 | 4:00 PM

A family-favourite holiday event returns to Melfort.

Several hundred people are expected through out the day for the 67th annual Melfort Fire Department’s (MFD) ‘Wing Ding’ event at the Kerry Vickar Centre, Saturday. The fundraiser features bingo and poker tables with all the prizes being Christmas themed. Deputy fire chief Doug Walsh has helped with the fundraiser for over three decades, and said it’s a intergenerational family event.

“You see a child from years past that has grown-up, and have a family and they are bringing their children. It’s a real great family day,” Walsh said.

Prizes include Christmas baskets, chocolates, non-alcoholic drinks, hams, turkeys and oranges. Walsh said winning isn’t important to most attendees, the focus is supporting the department.

“People remember it and it’s so nice that they keep coming out,” he said.

This event is the MFD’s largest fundraiser of the year, some the money has gone to equipment they’ve purchased over the years. This year a portion will go towards the launch of a water rescue team. The department has also given back to other agencies including the MS Society, the Salvation Army, Telemiracle and Special Olympics.

The event begins at 1:30 p.m. and continues into “late evening.” A concession is also available.
