Nipawin’s new Economic Developer excited for opportunity ‘close to home’

A tourism background fits well for the new Nipawin economic developer.

Prince Albert-born Jayne Remenda was very close to taking a “dream job” in the Northwest Territories prior to receiving a call from the town of Nipawin. Remenda said the similarities between her hometown and the Nipawin region were too good to pass up.

“I’ve always been attracted to the size of the town, the initiatives, the regional approach, the proximity to Lakeland and it’s that much closer to home,” Remenda told northeastNOW.

Remenda spent several years working in P.A. including a stint on city council before venturing to Saskatoon for a couple years working on contracts. In Nipawin, Remenda is hoping collaboration with other agencies such as the Chamber of Commerce and Business Improvement District continues. She said getting the word out is key.

“What we’re missing is that destination marketing organization and some serious marketing dollars in a coordinated strategic effort,” she said.

Remenda was awarded funding for a pair of upcoming marketing events at Monday’s council meeting. Representatives will have a booth set up at the 2018 Edmonton boat and sportsmen’s show again next year. The show is the largest of its kind in Canada. The town also agreed to spend $3,500 on bringing the Dimestore Fisherman television program back to the area. The production is celebrating two decades of shows by revisiting 20 of the fisherman’s favourite spots. Remenda said the filming will showcase more than angling.

“The program itself does an amazing job of promoting and highlighting local food, entertainment, outfitters, accommodations, that sort of thing,” she said.

Remenda said administrators hope to have community members involved in the shooting of the show. Details will become available in the new year.

Her plan for 2018 is to meet with every business in the region. Remenda said hearing the entrepreneur’s comments will help identify more strategies moving forward.

“Hopefully through a business retention and expansion type survey so we can gather some relevant information to assist me and council making decisions,” Remenda said.
