Nipawin committee ‘BID’s farewell to business group

The future of Nipawin’s Business Improvement District’s (BID) is dangerously in doubt.

At Nipawin’s council meeting Monday night councillors agreed to fund the town’s BID $50,000 for the 2018 fiscal year. Board chair Tom Weegar said that’s not enough money to operate, and his board made a decision at their meeting Wednesday.

“We’re submitting a letter to the town saying we can’t operate with that amount of money. Likely we will turn over the society to the town of Nipawin,” Weegar told northeastNOW.

In the organization’s five-year existence they’ve received over $400,000 in funding from the town. This year the group was seeking $117,000.

The BID was instrumental in the development of the town square and joined the Main Street Saskatchewan program. Weegar said the committee is currently working with a consultant on heritage conservation guidance. He said the town will have to honour that project.

“We’ve got to keep up with that contract as we turn things over to the town. The town will have to engage in that process,” Weegar said.

He added the decision wasn’t easy knowing the board had made progress.

“We’re very disappointed because we’ve accomplished so much, and we have the potential to continue to accomplish so much,” he said.
