Nipawin business improvement district future unclear

Dec 15, 2017 | 1:00 PM

The future of Nipawin’s business improvement district (BID) is unknown after the board decided to disolve on Wednesday.

At Nipawin town council’s meeting on Monday, councillors agreed to provide the BID with $50,000 in funding from the 2018 budget. The BID committee met on Wednesday where the board members chose to turn over the organization to the town. Nipawin’s chief administrative officer Barry Elliott said the organization still exists on paper.

“The funding is still on the books as part of the budget,” Elliott said.

Council has a couple options, Elliott said they could advertise to replace the board members or cease operations. He said the town respects the work the committee did and hopes there is a resolution.

“There is certainly positive support for the work BID has been doing. Council just needs to work through the transition,” Elliott said.

The town did receive a letter this week from board chair Tom Weegar. Elliott doesn’t expect councillors to discuss the letter as a whole group prior to the Christmas break. The town bylaw covering the current structure of BID runs until Dec. 31. The BID currently has a consultant looking at heritage conservation in the town that will continue into the new year.
