Lessmeister brings agriculture background to MLA race

A long-time resident of Lake Lenore is seeking the Saskatchewan Party nomination for the Melfort constituency.

Scott Lessmeister, the North American sales manager at Bourgault Industries in St. Brieux, joins Todd Goudy, Tim Hoenmans and Louise Schweitzer in the race.

He hosted a meet-and-greet Friday at Melfort’s Kerry Vickar Centre. Lessmeister, a former mayor of Lake Lenore, said working in politics takes someone willing to lead.

“I think I can be a strong representative for the Melfort constituency,” Lessmeister told northeastNOW. “I think it’s important good people step up and run for public office.”

While Lessmeister has the least exposure in the city among the candidates, he believes his time working in agriculture and manufacturing, the two largest economic factors in the riding, will serve the residents well.

“It doesn’t matter who gets elected, they have to represent the entire constituency. Whether it’s someone from the south of the constituency or someone from the City of Melfort they need to represent the entire region,” he said.

Lessmeister said the number one concern he’s heard since his campaign began is the population drop and service reductions in rural Saskatchewan.

The nomination meeting to determine Kevin Phillips replacement as the potential MLA for the riding will occur on Jan. 24.

The province has not set a date for the byelection.
