Viterra Scotties deemed a success

The host committee behind the 2018 Viterra Scotties Tournament of Hearts is still finalizing attendance and financial numbers, but all signs point to a positive event.

Nine of the best women’s curling teams converged on the city bringing fans to Melfort’s Northern Lights Palace last week. Event chair Corrie Fischl said the committee is happy with the outcome.

“…the fans were awesome, we had great attendance,” Fischl told northeastNOW. “Everything really came together, and the curling was great.”

Over 100 volunteers helped put the event on from Jan. 2 to 7, many of them members of the Melfort Curling Club. The local club will see the highest percentage of funds generated from the event, including 50/50 draws, raffles, the concession and beverage gardens. Fischl said the curling club board has given back to youth curling in the past, but is still finalizing where this year’s revenue will be targeted.

Fischel’s committee held a volunteer appreciation night at the rink thanking the group for their part in Melfort’s first provincial curling championship in five years.

The success stretched outside of the curling venue as well. Businesses reported increased activity throughout the week. Randy Wassermann is the manager of Prairie North Co-op, and he said all Co-op stores were busier.

“The week certainly provided a noticable increase in traffic in our stores. All our Melfort locations had a very good week, particularly our gas bar which was very busy,” Wassermann said.
