Mustangs and Hawks clean up weekly SJHL awards

The Melfort Mustangs and Nipawin Hawks have run away with this week’s SJHL player of the week awards.

Evan Plotnik from the Mustangs was named the week’s top goaltender. Plotnik turned away 54 out of 55 shots in two starts this week, both of which were Mustang wins. Last Tuesday, he made 22-saves as the Mustangs shutout the Flin Flon Bombers 3-0. On Saturday, he blocked 32 out of 33 shots in a 6-1 decision over La Ronge.

Plotnik has a record this year of 18-5-1 with a 2.13 goals against average and .927 save percentage.

Mustangs’ defenseman Loch Morrison took the league’s top defensive honours. Morrison, who is from Prince Albert, scored two goals and had two assists in three games played this past week. 

Morrison continues to lead the Mustangs in scoring this year with 14 goals and 29 assists in 36 games. 

Nipawin Hawks forward Austin Mikesch was named the MYSASK 411 SJHL Rookie of the Week.

Mikesch scored four goals in three games played this past week, stretching his goal scoring streak to five games overall. Mikesch scored two goals against Melville on Friday and also scored against them on Saturday. He also had a goal in a shootout loss to the Battlefords North Stars earlier in the week.
