RM of Torch River prepares for byelection

Jan 16, 2018 | 11:00 AM

Administration in the Rural Municipality of Torch River is keeping tight lipped about the controversy surounding its byelection this week, while still encouraging people to get out and vote.

Up for grabs on Wednesday are three council seats including the chair for reeve. The bylection was needed after three former councillors resigned from their posts in November. RM Administrator Nathalie Hipkins told northeastNOW there is a lot of interest in this election.

“I guess with the controversy that’s been happening we are expecting a lot of people to come out and vote and we hope that they do,” she said.

The three resignations came following three “code of ethics” complaints received in October. Hipkins would not comment on the “controversy” but said it is important people come out and vote so council can get on with its business.

“At the moment we do have four councillors so it is a quorum, but it is nice to have a full council,” Hipkins said.

According to a news release issued by the RM on Jan. 8, those who resigned were not necessarily tied to the complaints. The names of the people involved will not be released until the complaints are investigated. The RM has hired a lawyer to investigate the claims.

The candidates for reeve are Robert Allen, Terence Cunningham, Jerry Kindrit, and Darryl Matton. Ellery Fehr and Ken Runn are vying for the division four opening. Running for division five are Dalton Clifford, Heinz Klassen, and Richard Pickett.

The polls will be open tomorrow in White Fox at the RM office, and also at the legion halls in Smeaton and Choiceland from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
