Nipawin hosting regional figure skating competition

Jan 26, 2018 | 4:00 PM

There will be no shortage of besti squats or axel jumps this weekend in Nipawin.

Skate Nipawin is hosting a regional figure skating competition at Nipawin Centennial Arena. A total of 11 clubs from the Carrot River and Churchill regions will be represented at the event which runs Saturday and Sunday.

Plannning for the event started back in March. Nipawin Skate Chairperson Maxine Cook said many hours go into preparing for an event like this.

“We have to decorate the arena, build a judge’s stand on top of the player’s hockey box, book hotels in town, and feed all the officials,” she said.

The competition is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday and wraps up with the closing ceremonies on Sunday at 3:45 p.m. Cook said she is lucky to have a great organizing committee and lots of people offering to volunteer.

“We’ve had a lot of people come out saying they want to help out, old skating moms and dads that were members of our club many years ago,” she said.

Cook said this is meant to be a fun competition for the athletes but it is also the only competition the skaters can take part in ahead of provincials in March.
