Gronlid daycare group sees glimmer of hope

Jan 25, 2018 | 3:00 PM

The fight for a daycare in Gronlid continues.

Despite being turned down by the Northeast School Division (NESD) when they applied for a licensed daycare, members of Gronlid’s School Community Council (SCC) are still optimistic a space will be opened in the hamlet north of Melfort. Members of the daycare group claim they’ve followed every instruction possible, including raising $30,000 for upgrades to the section of the school that is now vacant due to the discontinuation of grades 9-12, and meeting with provincial representatives and NESD administration ahead of the final approval.

A day after members of the SCC spoke to the NESD board at the division’s monthly meeting regarding the decision to squash the proposed daycare, NESD chair Luke Perkins met with the daycare board. Perkins said the board isn’t popular after denying the proposal.

“There is a lot of bridges to repair, there’s trust issues, communication issues, they feel they aren’t being heard,” Perkins told northeastNOW. “They definitely have the option to send more information and I will forward that information to the board.”

The daycare organizing group began the process of opening the space in February of 2017. During Wednesday’s meeting, treasurer Amy Hedin said the NESD encouraged them to come up with ideas to make the school more “viable.” The daycare board members present at the meeting said all possible measures were taken to make the project happen, including passing health and education inspections.

Hedin said the daycare board is annoyed with the decision but are staying optimistic.

“We’re still frustrated because we still want to be heard,” she said. “We still want to meet with the [NESD] board and move forward with the daycare discussion.”

The daycare committee plans to develop another detailed report, with the hope of presenting it to all ten NESD board members in the future, she said.
