North Stars sting Mustangs

The Battlefords North Stars opened a lead over Melfort Wednesday night in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League action, and the Mustangs could never recover.

Melfort was able to close the gap to one goal in the second period but eventually dropped a 7-3 decision leading to the team’s second loss in a row. Levi Kleiboer, Chaseton Braid and Cole Johnson all scored for the North Stars in the first period taking a 3-0 lead at the Northern Lights Palace.

Johnson scored again early in the second period before Tristen Elder, Colin Schmidt and Reed Gunville answered for the Mustangs closing the gap to 4-3 after 40 minutes of play. Gunville added a pair of assists in the second period as well.

The North Stars took over in the third period discouraging any Mustang’s comeback, MacGregor Sinclair, Keith Anderson and Johnson hit the score sheet in the third capping the scoring.

Evan Plotnik allowed all seven goals on 24 shots, Hunter Arps stopped both shots he faced in relief. Joel Grzybowski picked up the win for the North Stars making 28 saves.

Melfort sits seven points behind the Nipawin Hawks for first in their division. The Mustangs next action is Saturday in Wilcox against the Notre Dame Hounds.
