The Melfort Mustangs snapped a two-game losing streak Saturday, knocking off the Notre Dame Hounds 5-2.

Tyson Meyers opened the scoring for Melfort, picking up his fifth goal of the season in the first, before the goals piled up in the second period.

Carson Albrecht scored his 17th goal of the year giving Melfort a 2-0 lead. Christopher Bernard cut the lead in half before Ben Allen restored the Mustangs’ two-goal lead with his first goal in a Melfort jersey. Sam Robinson pulled the Hounds back to within a goal before the end of the second period.

Melfort held onto the slight lead until the final minute of regulation, when Justin Ball and Albrecht each scored into an empty net while Notre Dame pulled Jake Ryan for an extra attacker. Ball and Albrecht each now have 18 goals on the year.

Hunter Arps stopped 24 of 26 Hounds shots, and Ryan made 24 saves on 27 Melfort shots on goal.

The Nipawin Hawks concluded a western Saskatchewan road trip by grounding the Kindersley Klippers 3-2.

The first period was goalless but the Hawks flew out to a 3-0 lead in the second period. Josh Mcdougall scored his 13th goal of the year, Wayde Johannesson added his first for the Hawks and Brandan Arnold scored his 26th goal of the campaign.

The Klippers fought back in the third period, scoring twice, but the Hawks hung on for the win, the 23rd in their last 25 starts.

The Mustangs now sit 10 points behind the Hawks for first in their division and Melfort has one less game played. Nipawin hosts Yorkton Tuesday while Melfort is home to Melville on Wednesday.
