Celebrating Indigenous artwork across the Northeast

Feb 5, 2018 | 8:35 PM

A calendar of Indigenous art is raising money for a local scholarship fund.

The initiative was created by Cumberland College’s First Nation Metis Advisory Council to feature student’s creativity. The program expanded to the entire North East School Division (NESD) region last year following a solid response for entries. Cumberland College marketing manager Brenda Mellon said they received a wide variety of pieces this year.

“We are very pleased with the quality of artwork as well as the number of submissions,” she said.

First year arts and science student Heather Hendry was one of the students whose art was selected by a small committee. She said a wildlife piece of a “wisdom wolf” was a great fit for the genre.

“It’s supposed to be Indigenous and when I think of their culture I think about animals and nature, so I thought a wolf would be nice,” she told northeastNOW.

The scholarship provided by the money raised is open to any NESD student that plans to attend any Cumberland College campus. Hendry’s submission is featured for the month of March. “Miss March” said she was pleased to have one of her two submissions chosen.

“It was exciting, it was so nice to hear that,” she said.

The calendars are available at the NESD office in Melfort or any Cumberland location.
