Undermanned Mustangs tame Terriers

Feb 7, 2018 | 10:39 PM

Despite a make-shift line-up peppered with rookies and AAA midget call-ups, the Mustangs doubled Yorkton 5-2 Wednesday night at the Northern Lights Palace.

Battered by injuries, especially with the defensemen four affiliate players dressed for Melfort, a pair of forwards were moved to the blueline by head coach Trevor Blevins to fill the roster. Tyson Meyers scored the Mustangs’ first and last goal of the game. He said the team managed to come together for the two points.

“We have enough players that can play other positions. We only had four defensemen, but forward Andrew Thompson is strong back there. We pulled it together,” he said.

Ben Allen had a strong game for the Mustangs as well, the 20-year-old scored his third and fourth goals of the year and added an assist. Zach Anderson also hit the scoresheet. Tristen Elder added two assists.

Hunter Arps got the start in goal for the Mustangs making 24 saves in his 12th victory of the year. Yorkton’s Ben Laidlaw faced 46 Mustang shots allowing all five goals.

Melfort is now 32-10-4-1 with 11 games remaining. The team seems destined to have home ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs in the four versus five first match-up. Meyers said the short bench could be a positive for the team heading into the post season.

“It’s alright being short-handed before playoffs because we can learn who can step up in games and have some lines made up already if we run into injury problems,” he said.

Melfort hosts the Flin Flon Bombers Friday in the team’s next action.
