No decision from Rider head coach after Carter’s pot charge

Saskatchewan Roughriders head coach Chris Jones says he’s disappointed by Duron Carter’s legal problems.

The star receiver was charged with possession of marijuana at the Winnipeg airport last November and again at the Saskatoon airport on Feb. 2.

“It was one of those deals where it is kind of like a family member or a close friend gets in a situation like that. I was disappointed,” Jones told reporters by telephone Wednesday.

“I thought we were a bit beyond that sort of thing.”

Carter is one of the Riders star players, appearing on both offence and defence during the 2017 season.

The 26-year-old makes his first court appearance in Winnipeg Thursday, with his Saskatoon hearing set for next month.

“We will wait to see what the legal process goes through and what the authorities say and then we will have more of a comment on what happens with Duron,” Jones explained.

“We’ve had our people look at it and it appears that it will just be a fine, but we will have to wait and see.”

Jones also told reporters Carter did not inform him of the first charge when they were together in Florida in early January.

The head coach said he would rather meet face-to-face with Carter, which he will do soon, to “sit down and discuss what’s going on and try and put it behind us and grow up a little bit.”
