Northeast Outreach and Support Services expands to Nipawin

Feb 16, 2018 | 4:00 PM

Melfort-based Northeast Outreach and Support Services (NEOSS)  now has a counsellor working full-time in Nipawin.

NEOSS has provided support in the Nipawin region on a part-time basis until now. The organization partnered with the town who provided an office for the counsellor. Julie Nicholet is a personal violence counsellor and based in Nipawin. She said the region was too busy for them to only only offer their services two days a week.

“It doesn’t matter where you live. It’s not about race or economic status. None of those factors are part of violence; it’s across the board and it can happen to anybody in small communities,” Nicholet told northeastNOW.

The organization held a grand opening of the Nipawin office on Friday. Nicholet said their goal is to make people aware that help is available for victims of violence or assault.

“Being able to educate youth, parents, anyone, so they know what abuse is and then the victims can identify assault which will help stop violence in the end,” she said.

Nicholet provides counselling to both women and men. She will also have educational sessions at Cumberland College locations and schools across the Northeast. NEOSS also uses events such as International Women’s Day and sexual assault week to help spread awareness and advertise their services.

The new Nipawin office is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The office is located at 218 Second Ave. E.
