City of Melfort promotes play

Feb 22, 2018 | 9:00 AM

Melfort is hosting ten days of events in March, in hopes of promoting active living and winning some cash for the city.

For the second year, Melfort will enter the Go Out and Play Challenge from March 1 to 10. The contest, open to Saskatchewan centres, is judged based on the number of hours of physical activity logged by residents. Director of community services Ryan Danberg said the organizers wanted to make sure everyone had a chance to participate.

“We used social media and channelled what we could to get the word out,” Danberg said. “[Last year] we heard lots of comments that people wish they’d known about the challenge.”

The Town of Langenburg won the contest last year, logging over 506,000 hours of activity. If Melfort is victorious, the $10,000 grand prize money will be used for playground equipment at Maude Burke School. Aquatic Centre Manager Tim Herzberg organized the list of events, and said the community needs to come together if they hope to win the prize.

“There’s lots of different activities,” he said. “The city has put together some unique prizes for engaged participants.”

Online profiles can be created starting Thursday. There are two prizes for families and two more up for grabs for individuals. The prizes are either an hour’s ice rental at the arena, an hour-long private pool party, or an hour of gym time at the Kerry Vickar Centre (KVC).

The city has lined up at least one activity per day at several venues across the city, including the Northern Lights Palace, the aquatic centre and the KVC. An outdoor day-long festival will take place March 4 at Spruce Haven Park.

The winner will be announced March 15.
