Northern districts prevail on Blue Mountain

The northern districts prevailed in the opening day of cross country skiiing at the Saskatchewan Winter Games, held Thursday at Blue Mountain Adventure Park. 

For the Lakeland district, Prince Albert’s Jessica Gill finished in the top of the senior female 7.3 km classic with a time of 31 minutes, 25 seconds, more than seven minutes faster than any competitor. Team North’s Sarah Faktor, a resident of Flin Flon, finished in a tie for second place along with Regina’s Jenaya Morrison. 

In the senior male 7.3 km race, Flin Flon’s David Richard, of Team North, finished with a time of 27:33, just 26 seconds better than Lakeland’s Alex Wilson, from Shellbrook. For the North district, that’s their first gold medal of the games. Both Richard and Wilson were more than five minutes faster than the rest of the field.

The cross country skiing senior 500-metre and 250-metre sprints will take place Friday, and the relay races will be held Saturday.
