Melfort Fire Department receives donation for rescue team

The Melfort fire department is getting close to their fundraising goal, which will allow them to launch a regional ice and water rescue team.

Melody Motors and Melfort Towing and Recovery got together to donate $2,000 towards the initiative Friday. Melody Motors General Manager Ken Madraga said his brother Kevin was a member of the department for 24 years, so the department is close to his family’s hearts. He said donating to the detachment was an easy decision.

“Kevin knows exactly what it takes to keep the trucks rolling,” Madraga said. “It’s not an easy job for the firefighters. It’s nice when the community comes forward and supports the department, so they can buy equipment to make the job easier.”

Fire chief Paul See realized the need for an ice/water rescue team for the region shortly after he took the job in May of last year, as the nearest firefighters trained to deal with water incidents are in in Prince Albert. The fundraising goal to launch the team was set at $20,000, and Friday’s donation pushed the total to almost $17,000. See said businesses such as Melody Motors have been integral in helping support the project.
