MUCC Comets girls’ basketball team returning to HOOPLA

The Melfort Comets senior girls’ basketball team are HOOPLA bound once again.

The reigning 4A girls high school basketball champions downed Warman Wolverines 85-37 at Melfort and Unit Comprehensive Collegiate (MUCC) Saturday to punch their ticket to the provincial championships. Coach Kelly Linnell said after last year’s surprising victory the team is no longer under the radar.

“Last year was our first time going to HOOPLA in 10 years, so we were pretty excited. This year going in we’re ranked number one and we have a little bit more pressure on us to win,” Linnell said.

HOOPLA will take place in Prince Albert this year on March 23 and 24. The Comets will meet Moose Jaw Central in their first game on Saturday. Linnell said the team’s experience will be an advantage going into the tournament.

“I think the girls need to stay focused and not get distracted by all of the people and the crowds,” she said.

The Comets were victorious in their own home tournament this season as well. Linnell said that experience will also keep the team focused on the end goal of another provincial banner.

Two other Northeast Saskatchewan teams will compete in HOOPLA, both are from St. Brieux. The Crusader boys and girls teams were victorious this past weekend at regionals. The boys downed Stobart 89-41 in the semi-finals of the 2A tournament. The team outscored Beauval 97-75 in the title game. St. Brieux opens HOOPLA against Osler VCA on March 23.

The girls rolled over Outlook LCBI 89-27 in their semi-finals and defeated Langham 67-47 in the final to qualify for HOOPLA in the 1A category. Their first opponent will be Kenaston, also on March 23.
