Mustangs, Hawks suffer game-three road losses

Mar 21, 2018 | 1:09 AM

The Melfort Mustangs trail their Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League quarter-final series two games to one after a 4-1 Broncos win in Humboldt Tuesday.

After a split of the first two games in Melfort on the weekend, the best-of-seven series shifted to the Elgar Petersen Arena for games three and four. The opening period was scoreless, but the Broncos took the lead early in the second period. Mustangs’ defenseman Tyler Heidt scored with 30 seconds left in the second, tying the game at 1-1.

Humboldt scored three times in the third period, including an empty-netter with 31 seconds remaining to cap off the scoring. Heidt said the third period wasn’t the whole issue for the team.

“I think we had a tough start tonight, and it carried on from there,” he told northeastNOW after the loss. “We didn’t bring our game from puck drop, and that can’t happen in a playoff game.”

Evan Plotnik stopped 23 shots in the loss and Parker Tobin was the winning netminder for the Broncos, turning aside 27 of 28 Melfort chances.

Special teams hurt the Mustangs in the contest as well. Melfort was 0/6 on the power-play, including an early five-minute advantage, and the Broncos scored two goals while on the power-play on five opportunities. Heidt said the club needs to regroup and prepare for Wednesday’s game four.

“If we go down 3-1, it won’t be good for us. We have to bring it tomorrow and have a better start,” he said.

Face-off is 7:30 p.m.

In Flin Flon, the Bombers upset Nipawin 3-2, but the Hawks still lead the series 2-1.

The Bombers opened a two-goal lead in the second period thanks to Brandson Hein and Ethan Daniels before Brandan Arnold picked up his fourth goal of the postseason cutting the lead to 2-1.

Chrystopher Collin scored the eventual game-winner for Flin Flon at the 13:14 mark in the third period. Josh McDougall scored his second of the playoffs, drawing the Hawks back within a goal, but the Bombers held on for the victory.

Nipawin’s Declan Hobbs stopped 39 shots in the loss, and Brenden Newton allowed a pair of goals on 30 Hawks’ shots.

Game four will be in Flin Flon Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
