NDP call on Sask Party to ‘invest wisely in Saskatchewan people’ in upcoming budget

Apr 5, 2018 | 2:00 PM

The Saskatchewan NDP has called on the Sask Party government to “invest wisely in Saskatchewan people” in their upcoming provincial budget.

Newly-minted NDP Leader Ryan Meili said this budget needs to look far into the future to ensure continued economic growth rather than relying on short-term solutions.

“What we need in this budget are the right investments that will get Saskatchewan people back to work and grow the economy,” Meili said in a statement.

“The Sask Party has taken a short-sighted approach in previous budgets, spending excessively on pet projects while cutting the core services that are the foundation for future prosperity.”

Meili’s comments were echoed by NDP Finance Critic Cathy Sproule, who said a short-sighted budget could lead to increased provincial debt and could have more people leaving the province to seek opportunities elsewhere.

The NDP called for investment in “key areas” including housing, education, healthcare, and early-childhood education in order to boost economic activity in the future and reduce costs for health, justice and social services.

The provincial budget will be tabled April 10.
