Free phone-in legal clinic held across Saskatchewan

Apr 17, 2018 | 12:00 PM

A free law phone-in clinic happening this week is connecting volunteering lawyers with people who need legal advice.

The Saskatchewan branch of the Canadian Bar Association and Pro Bono Law Saskatchewan are teaming up for Free Law Day April 17 and 18. The event is held each year across the country to mark the signing of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Christopher Wietzel, Free Law Day Chair, said people across Saskatchewan can book a time to phone in and get answers to their legal questions. Wietzel said questions can range from family law issues to rental disputes, contracts, product liability, slips and falls, and insurance claims.

“People can call from anywhere to book this, and the lawyers are from all across Saskatchewan as well,” Weitzel said. “A lot of people that are using this are just trying to get that initial advice and then they may make a decision about whether they actually want to go on retainer with a lawyer or not.”

Weitzel said the annual phone-in event is also a way for lawyers across Saskatchewan to give back to their community and help people better understand the justice system. He said 13 lawyers from across the province are volunteering for the event this week.
