Taxes up slightly in Tisdale, base tax continues

Apr 24, 2018 | 5:00 PM

Taxes are up slightly in Tisdale and residents will continue to pay a base to cover the cost of the Newmarket Manor long-term care facility in the community.

Tisdale town council voted in favour earlier this month of raising taxes by 1.5 per cent. Council also passed a bylaw to continue with a base tax of $150 on every property. The base tax was put in place to cover the town’s share of the cost of a new long-term care facility in Tisdale.

Town of Tisdale administrator Brad Hvidston said the tax increase is small and will help risng costs of inflation in the growing community. Construction on a new Co-op grocery store is continuing, and a permit has been issued for a new touchless car wash.

“It’s very busy here,” Hvidston added.

“We’ve had a lot of development this last year, and we’re hoping that rolling into this year. We’ve had a busy spring here already.”

Town council is also continuing with the New Business Vacant Building Incentive Policy, which gives tax breaks to new business owners looking to set up shop in Tisdale. Hvidston said they’ve had several business owners take advantage of the policy.

“If a commercial building has been empty for six months or more and somebody buys it to start a new business, we provide an incentive … to help them out in their first two years,” he added.

The tax policy gives new business owners an exemption of 50 per cent in their current year, up to $2,000, and 25 per cent in their second year, up to $1,000.
