Kick-off to the SCMA awards

Apr 28, 2018 | 9:19 AM

The party has started in Prince Albert!

Fans of country music headed to Wiley’s Pub last night to take in the show at the kick-off party to the Saskatchewan Country Music Awards. The fun got underway Friday evening as country performers took to the stage to perform some of their favourite melodies and network with other local artists.

Carmen Robertson organized the kick-off party and said the event included veteran performers and some up-and-coming rising stars.

“There’s some young 13, 14, 15-year-olds, and some old war veterans, and the guys that have been around for a while and weekend warriors and that kind of stuff, but it’s all about the music,” Robertson said.

The kick-off party was the start of a jam-packed weekend in Prince Albert that also features a songwriters’ café, adult and youth music showcase and president’s banquet. The annual SCMA Awards show happens tonight at the E.A. Rawlinson Centre for the Arts. The awards gala will be emceed by Jess Moskaluke, a Juno-award winning artist from Saskatchewan.

The party continues after the awards event, with another party back at Wiley’s Pub. On Sunday, a gospel brunch is set for 9 a.m. at the Prince Albert Inn, followed by the Saskatchewan Country Music Association AGM.

John Quinn, Co-Chair for the SCMA event said the SCMA event is always a good chance for artists to network with others in the music business.

“We’ve always had a very vibrant country music association in Prince Albert,” Quinn said. “We’ve got a lot of great players in Prince Albert who go on to bigger and better things.”
