Sharing stories

Apr 28, 2018 | 2:00 PM

The songwriter’s cafe has always been one of the featured events during the Saskatchewan Country Music Awards weekend, providing song writers a chance to share their stories as well as get some tips from other songwriters.

Debden’s Stephanie Rose, who has two award nominations this year, was one of the featured performers Saturday morning at Wiley’s Pub.

“I love telling stories so this is a good opportunity to do that and just see what other writers are doing too,” she said.

Rose said she always tries to write from the heart, adding her songs reflect her own personal experiences.

“I guess the biggest challenge to songwriting is trying to find your own voice and have that original sound,” she said, “Maybe not always what’s current but something that is you.”

Steve Andrew, the front man for the band Aces Wild, drove to Prince Albert from Lloydminster.

“A lot of people just hear the stories on the radio, or on itunes, or something like that and they don’t know where the songs come from so its’s nice to explain that because some songs have a really good story behind them,” he said.

Andrew said the song writer’s cafe also provides a great opportunity to meet other musicians and discuss collaborations.

Erin Hill from Medstead, who just released her new album, has been to the songwriter’s cafe four times.

“You get to hear everyone else’s stories and kind of methods on writing and there are always a ton of people to talk to,” she said.

Hill is nominated for “Emerging Artist” at the Saskatchewan Country Music Association Awards this year.  The Gala Awards night takes place Saturday night at the E.A. Rawlinson Centre.
