Melfort’s Hancock among 42 Sask-born players taken in WHL bantam draft

Melfort native Jeremy Hancock and Carrot River native Jayden Wiens were among 42 Saskatchewan-born players selected in Thursday’s Western Hockey League bantam draft.

Hancock, listed at 6’4″, 170 lbs., was selected with the 72nd overall pick in the fourth round by the Red Deer Rebels. He put up 11 points in 26 games this season from the back end, playing in Edmonton for their OHA bantam prep team that competes in the Canadian Sport School Bantam Hockey League. Wiens, a forward listed at 5’7″, 135 lbs., was selected with the 155th overall pick in the eighth round by the Saskatoon Blades. The 14-year-old registered 36 points in just 23 regular season games this year with the North East Wolfpack bantam AA club.

Humboldt native Noah Barlage and Leroy Sask. native Connor McGrath were also selected in the draft. Barlage was taken by the Seattle Thunderbirds in the seventh round, 142nd overall, while McGrath was taken by the Everett Silvertips in the ninth round, 196th overall.
