Anonymous tip leads to investigation at Saskatchewan Polytechnic

May 8, 2018 | 5:00 PM

An investigation is underway following an anonymous tip alleging academic misconduct at Saskatchewan Polytechnic.

Dr. Anne Neufeld, Provost and vice president of academics at Saskatchewan Polytechnic, said an allegation has been made anonymously that students at the school are being provided advance copies of exams. The investigation is still in the early stages, Neufeld said, and there are few details at this point.

“A few weeks ago, we did receive an anonymous tip suggesting the allegation was that our students were receiving exams in advance from faculty members,” Neufeld said. “Because the allegations are about students and faculty, this investigation is being done by our dean for that particular area as well as the association dean, in association with my office.”

Neufeld said the tipster is believed to be someone outside the organization. She said one interview was conducted last week with a faculty member. Her hope is to wrap up the investigation before June 30, the end of the academic school year.

“At the same time, we want to make sure that were very thorough and comprehensive in the review,” Neufeld told paNOW.

Justin Skwark, president of the Saskatchewan Polytechnic Students’ Association, said Tuesday that he’s waiting to hear more information about the allegation.

“I do know that they are trying to figure out what of the allegation may be true, if any at all,” Skwark said. “At this time, it is just speculation and allegations.”

Neufeld said the organization is interested in hearing from anyone who may have information about the allegation. She said the accusation is disappointing, but the school will investigate it fully.

“We really want our students to be successful, and we want our students to learn,” Neufeld added. “That’s why we are here — to help them. Now, if they make a poor decision, we are going to use our full investigation and we’re going to abide by our conduct polices and there will be consequences.”
