One RCMP officer died and another was injured in a collision near Lampman, Sask. Tuesday night.

According to the RCMP, the single-vehicle collision happened just outside the southeastern town shortly after 9 p.m. May 15 when the vehicle carrying the two off-duty officers left the road and rolled. The 55-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene, police said, and the 27-year-old passenger was taken to hospital for treatment. Both men were members of the Estevan detachment, the RCMP said, though they were not on duty at the time and were not driving an RCMP vehicle.

The RCMP said initial investigation indicates alcohol was not a factor in the collision. The identities of the two officers were not released, though the RCMP said both men were from the Estevan area.

The incident is under investigation with help from several RCMP specialist teams. The police force has also ensured employee assistance services, peer-to-peer support and chaplaincy services are available to their other members.
