Aces hockey program expanding

May 26, 2018 | 8:00 AM

A major agreement has been signed affecting female hockey in northeast Saskatchewan.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was a joint initiative by the Tisdale Minor Hockey Association, Nipawin Minor Hockey Association, and Melfort Minor Hockey Association. Lori Kidney, Female Division Head with Tisdale Minor Hockey said the MOU about giving more young girls a chance to play hockey for the Northeast Aces.

“Communities from all around are going to come and if they are interested in their girls becoming Northeast Aces, we’re all going to work together,” she said.

Based on Governance changes within the Saskatchewan Hockey Association (SHA), and the North Sask Female Hockey League (NSFHL) and the South Sask Female Hockey League (SSFHL) merging into the Saskatchewan Female Hockey League (SFHL), Kidney said the associations saw an opportunity to create a regional female hockey program with surrounding communities. She added it’s very possible they may have one or two Aces teams in each division.

“In the past everyone was sort of working on their own and it sometimes became a challenge to get the numbers and get the teams formed,” she said

Kidney said the MOU was needed in response to a great deal of public interest. Last year the Northeast Aces program had only a peewee and bantam team, and now expectations are that there will be Peewee, Bantam, Midget and Midget AA North East Aces team(s) in the 2018- 19 season, with Bantam AA added for the 2019-20 season, as per SHA’s 2019-20 proposals. Moving forward Kidney sad they would be interested in having a AAA Northeast Aces team. The SHA has asked all its member communities to re-apply this fall.

“There’s an upcoming meeting where we are going to get more information on that and I think it’s definitely something the committee will be discussing,” Kidney said.
