Tisdale museum gets funding to build replica service station

Jun 15, 2018 | 2:00 PM

A Tisdale museum is closer to its goal of building a replica service station that doubles as an all-weather workshop after the project got a $60,000 boost from Federated Co-op.

The Tisdale and District Museum is going ahead with plans to build the shop, which will allow volunteers to work on museum projects over the winter such as renovations, repairs to displays, or restoring old furniture. The shop will be built to look like a replica Co-op service station from years past and will be located on the main street of the museum’s village, known as Doghide Village.

The museum received a grant through the Co-op’s Community Spaces program, which provides funding for a variety of projects around the country. Federated Co-op also awarded grants for playground upgrades to the Tisdale Elementary School, enhancements to both the Rotary Park and North Park in Melfort, the Town Square Pavilion in Carrot River, and the Humboldt Public School.

Tisdale and District Museum President Cal Farough said a sod turning and cheque presentation are expected to take place later this month. The museum board has been fundraising for the project for the last three years, he said, and has raised $15,000 toward the project as well.

“Up until now, all of the buildings in the Doghide Village are original buildings, so this will be the first one that’s a replica,” Farough told northeastNOW. “We’re almost in shock, quite honestly, that after trying for three years, that we can actually now do it.”

Farough said organizers are hoping to start construction on the shop after Canada Day. Farough said details about the replica’s final design are still being worked out and the museum board will discuss it again at its upcoming meeting Tuesday.
