NEOSS hiring more staff to meet demand for services

Jun 18, 2018 | 2:00 PM

Programming for women and families trying help to escape domestic violence continues to be in demand in the northeast region, and a local organization that works with victims is bringing on more staff and volunteers to help meet the need.

Louise Schweitzer, executive director with North East Outreach and Support Services (NEOSS), said the program has hired additional staff and is seeking more to fill some casual and part-time positions. NEOSS operates a domestic violence shelter, along with an emergency children’s shelter and a 24-hour crisis line.

The organization opened its new domestic violence shelter two years ago this month. Schweitzer said NEOSS has opened more spaces in the emergency receiving home to accommodate those in need and is looking for more staff to work in various other roles as well. The group is also seeking volunteers to help out when staffing is limited, she said, such as after hours or at special events.

“The shelter has ran pretty well full from April on, with waiting lists,” Schweitzer told northeastNOW. “We knew the need was there, and that’s why we built the facility, but it’s fairly consistent.”

NEOSS works with individuals and families from across the Northeast, but Schweitzer pointed out that people from other regions can also seek help from their organization. The 24-hour crisis line is available to anyone needing a supportive ear, she said, regardless of the issue.

“We constantly, as an organization, are identifying more and more needs and requirements out in the communities,” she added.

Schweitzer said NEOSS is currently working on a new strategic plan and will host its annual general meeting this Wednesday at the Kerry Vickar Centre in Melfort.
