White Fox man offers local families a ‘reel’ good time

A business owner in White Fox is casting a line out to needy families in his community.

Dean Foster, Owner of Buddha’s Bait Shop, has been collecting used fishing rods and gear for a few weeks. Starting Thursday, the gear can be signed out by anyone.

“I grew up a little on the streets, and I’m still grateful for the day my aunt gave me a fishing rod and took me fishing,” he said. “It kind of changed my life.”

Foster said he’s had a great response so far to his Fixed for Fishing program and thinks it will be a big success. He said he thinks the program will be of particular benefit to families from outside of town who want to spend the day at Waskesiu or Tobin Lake.

“If you don’t bring it back, well, I’ve put that family fishing rod in their hands, so either way we would have given it to you for free,” he said.

Anyone who wishes to make a donation can do so at the business, and Foster said he still needs tackle boxes, lures, fishing line, rod tips, and life jackets.

The small community will be getting some national exposure next month. The TV series Fishing the Wild West and host Wes David will be in White Fox from July 5-9 to film a couple episodes, and a commercial for next season. On Sunday July 8, Buddha’s Bait Shop will be hosting a meet and greet with David. Free burgers and cold drinks will be available to anyone that drops in with something for the Fixed for Fishing program, Foster said.
