Skaters in the Northeast will be doing backflips along with their kickflips in response to the City of Melfort’s announcement.

The Spruce Haven Skate Park will be open to the public July 13, with a grand opening taking place July 24 at 6:30 p.m.

Director of Community services Ryan Danberg told northeastNOW the city has already been receiving calls from skating groups in cities such as Edmonton and Saskatoon.

“It’s certainly surprising to see our reach go as far as Edmonton,” Danberg said. “We’re quite optimistic that it’s going to bring some traffic to town and have an economic impact in the community.”

While the concrete work is finished, the city is asking the public not to use the park as the site is still a construction zone.

Danberg said the park will be fenced and secured until landscaping is complete and power gets installed.

In addition to the $700,000 skate park, the Spruce Haven recreation area is projected to expand further with a splash park, playground, two soccer pitches, and a washroom/change room expected to be built and functioning by the middle of next summer.
