Nipawin street fair and exhibition gets underway

Jul 13, 2018 | 2:00 PM

Nipawin is gearing up for a host of exciting events as the community’s annual parade, street fair and exhibition get underway on Sunday.

The events kick off Sunday afternoon with a parade and street fair in downtown Nipawin. The street fair will feature entertainment, games and prizes, concessions and horse-drawn transportation. The parade starts at 3 p.m. with wagon rides running from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday.

Sharla Salmond with Boreal Clydesdales said Sunday will be the first time her horses have participated in the street fair.

“They’re very easy to work with and definitely nice to be around,” Salmond said of the Clydesdales. “It’s something new to try out (and) it’s something that I’ve always wanted to do.”

Kim Isaacson, secretary with the Nipawin Exhibition committee says there will be lots to see and do at the annual exhibition, which runs Monday to Wednesday. The exhibition will feature indoor exhibits, a petting zoo, music, chuckwagons, barrel racing and a trade show. The beef show runs Monday only, beginning at 10 a.m.

Isaacson said thousands of people descend on Nipawin every year for the events. The exhibition is celebrating 90 years this year, she added.

“We’re pretty proud of that,” Isaacson told northeastNOW.

“We love it, and we just want to keep the events in town, we want to keep it rolling. A lot of us that are on the volunteer board now, had grandparents and great-grandparents that were very involved, so it’s just a part of us.”

The events attracts residents and visitors from near and far, Isaacson added, and the number of people participating in various shows and activities is also up. A full schedule of events and times can be found on the Nipawin Exhibition website.

“We’ve got a fantastic show and fantastic sponsors,” she said. “The community support is just overwhelming.”
