Appropriate Shelter for Pets

Dec 29, 2017 | 9:28 AM

Now that the temperatures are more “seasonal”, we’ve had several calls about pets without appropriate shelter.

The Animal Protection Act states that animals must have adequate shelter, but what does that mean?

The answer is that it depends on the dog – it may not be possible to keep a small short coated dog comfortable outside in -30, but a thick coated Malamute may be comfortable with a fairly basic shelter. Generally we require that dogs who spend any amount of time outside have an insulated dog house of appropriate size.

The Saskatchewan SPCA has a brochure about building an insulated dog house here: http://sspca.ca/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/idealdoghouse.pdf

And the Regina Humane Society has some great information about shelter for dogs here: http://reginahumanesociety.ca/pet-care/dog-care/dog-shelter/

If you have concerns about animals without adequate shelter in our service area (anywhere other than the cities of Saskatoon, Regina, Prince Albert of Moose Jaw), please call us at 306-382-0002 or use our online reporting form at http://animalprotectionservices.ca/report-animal-abuse/
