Uptick in student enrolment at North East School Division

The North East School Division is reversing enrolment trends for the better.

“(We have) turned the corner a bit in the North East School Division,” Director of Education Don Rempel said. “We’re starting to have increased enrolments year-over-year, and our local data suggests that that might be continuing as well into the future.”

The recent statistics include a forecast for next year.

“Our early projections for next year indicate a continued increase in enrolment,” Rempel said.

The division saw an increase of 85 students from this time last year.

When asked why the numbers are turning around after years of declining enrolment, Rempel said it’s likely due to birth rates and newcomers to the province.

“We are starting to see the same amount of students entering school as we have graduating,” he said.

Rempel said from funding perspectives, administrators look at the aggregate amount from the whole school division, but a few communities continue to have declining enrolment, and those tend to be the small schools that are getting smaller.

Meanwhile, there is positive news in the Horizon School Division as well.

Numbers released Nov. 13 indicate an increase of 77 students enrolled this year compared to last.
