A pleasant surprise for Big Brothers Big Sisters Melfort.

The organization has received a cheque for $5,000 from the Rexall Foundation.

The cheque presentation took place at the Rexall in the Melfort Wellness Centre on Monday.

“Rexall, throughout the year, does…fundraising drives, and then this team here was one of the teams that really excelled at collecting donations for the community,” said pharmacy district manager Stephen Rasimus. “So in recognition for their hard work in getting those funds, we decided to make a presentation to a local charity.”

The decision to support Big Brothers Big Sisters came from the local Rexall store, said district manager Daryl Houston.

“[Supporting BBBS Melfort] was actually something the store team came up with on their own,” said Houston. “That was their decision, and they…provided it back to the Rexall Foundation and they accepted that as a donated facility to be able to work with.”

Kathryn Carswell of Big Brothers Big Sisters Melfort said news of the Rexall Foundation’s donation came as a shock.

“It was totally a surprise,” said Carswell. “I just got a phone call and yeah, I was elated, it was amazing.”

Carswell said the money will go to a good cause.

“It’s actually a substantial donation and it will make a huge impact,” said Carswell. “We’re planning to use the funds to enhance our youth programming.”

Rasimus said it’s nice to see the community engagement from the local Rexall team, and that they chose BBBS Melfort as a local charity to support.
