Melfort Fire Department ready for fire safety trailer tours

Storing a fire trailer in their hall has given the Melfort Fire Department an opportunity to provide hands-on fire safety education.

The trailer is made specifically for fire safety lessons. The features include an educational Timon and Pumbaa video, a kitchen to simulate stove and oven fire scenarios, a bedroom to go over escape options, and a heated door which has a function to produce fake smoke.

The Melfort Fire Department will host the fire safety trailer for the winter (Facebook/Melfort Fire and Rescue).

Jason Everitt, Melfort’s fire chief, told northeastNOW the fire department has already given its firefighters’ families and friends a lesson with the trailer, but members want to start bringing the public in for tours.

“What we’ll do is likely have an open house and then people can come in,” Everitt said. “There’s already interest from school groups to come through. We want to put as many people through here as we can. It’s a good trailer and a good tool for us to promote fire safety.”

Humboldt and Warman’s fire department are responsible for scheduling where the fire safety trailer goes throughout the year. Fire departments across Saskatchewan will be able to take the trailer for a few days, or a week, to show it off and teach their residents before another department picks it up.

The Melfort Fire Department will hold the fire safety trailer for the rest of winter, although Everitt hopes to host it again in 2020.
